St. Malo is a rebellious city, which has always fought for its independence. Founded in the sixth century by Mac Low , a Welsh monk who became Duke of Alet, Saint-Malo grew rapidly from the thirteenth century through the first catches taken by the St. Malo inhabitants on enemy ships. Alternately city of the Kingdom of France, or independent, Saint-Malo often changed status.
Jacques cartier contributed greatly to the fame of Saint-Malo, with its discovery of Canada in the fifteenth century, the harbor became a port of global importance, at start and end for ocean crossings to the Americas, the Mediterranean and India.
Shipowners, sailors, privateers or pirates... the sea made the fortune of many inhabitants of Saint Malo. This is thanks to it that the city now has such a heritage, rich malouins built beautiful houses as witnesses to their importance in society. We can still find beautiful stone houses in Saint-Malo.
The battlements are also a top tourist attraction in St. Malo. We like to walk around and watch the waves that come to run aground and also discover the 11 gates and bastions : the Saint-Vincent gate, the gate of St. Thomas, the St. Louis bastion or the Great Gate. The ramparts of St. Malo have been listed National Monument since 1921.
St. Malo is also famous for its mansions called Malouinières. The closest to the city center is the Malouinière of Wild Well. The Malouinière of Montmarin is on the other side of the Rance while Malouinière Chipaudiere is the most impressive.
