Schoelcher Tourism - Martinique

Tourist information:

The town of Martinique, Schoelcher, residential outskirts of Fort-de-France, is located on the Caribbean coast, west of the Island and north of the capital of Martinique. Formerly known as Case-Navire, this fishing village is growing: dynamic, lively and sporty, this resort, classified as "Sailing Boating & Tourism Resort", is now the headquarters of the University of the Antilles and Guyana.

History

Formerly called Case-Navire, the town took its name from the famous French abolitionist Victor Schoelcher who signed the decree abolishing on behalf of the Government of the Second Republic, on April 27 1848.

Schoelcher was also a very popular site for Native Americans in the early days of colonization through its creek that served as a shelter from bad weather. The Anse-Madame left some vestiges of Native history. At that time, the village living from fishing and sugar mills like those of Rousseau Fund ceased operation at the end of the nineteenth century.

To see / To do

Scholes has many tourist facilities: hotels, restaurants, the largest casino of the Island, the Palais des Congrès, Madiana, or a complex of ten cinemas (the only one in Martinique).

Classified seaside resort since 1969, Schoelcher prides itself on being the first sports center of the Island and ensures quality installations. The city lies on the Caribbean coast, with its mountains and coves sheltering black sandy beaches. Moreover, Schoelcher has five beautiful beaches!

Schoelcher is also home to the University Campus which hosts the faculties of arts, social science, law and economics.
