At the beginning, La Vilette was a rural place whose river –the Ourcq- was used to fill Paris fountains. The baron Haussmann made a national meat market of this area. The slaughterhouse closed in 1974, leaving 55 hectares of abandoned ground.

La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie (city of Science and Industry) was inaugurated on the 13th March, 1986 during the passing of Halley’s comet.

The Cite offers a complete demonstration of all sciences and technologies combining communication, environment, health, astronomy, computer science…

From the hall, you can access various exhibitions based on education and games.
Children and adults will discover the “Cité des enfants” (City of children), Louis Lumiere’s cinema with its 3D projections, the giant aquarium, the mediatheque…

One can also have a walk inside the heart of the “Geode” symbol of the Cite and a pearl of modern technologies, mixing glass and iron.
This 36-centimetre-large diameter sphere shelters a cinema doted with a 360° 1 000-square-meter giant screen.
