Après la destruction de la ville pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, dons, dépôts et acquisitions ont permis de constituer le fonds du musée, qui évoque l'aventure des cap horniers du XVIIème au premier tiers du XIXème, le développement des grandes compagnies, les itinéraires de voyages, les régions concernées par les longs-cours.

le musée est installé dans un solide ouvrage guerrier du XVe formé de trois tours disposées en triangle.
