Description
Monument and museum dedicated to the terrible story of the Holocaust and Jewish history during the Second World War, the Shoah Memorial was opened on January 27, 2005, on the site of the Unknown Jewish Martyr. It was inaugurated on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the European Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and prevention of crimes against humanity.
The Shoah Memorial is a teaching place dedicated to the Holocaust. Its role is to understand the past to illuminate the future. It remains a " bastion against oblivion, against hatred and contempt" according to Eric de Rothschild, president of the Memorial. It perpetuates memory and teaching through encounters between generations.
It acts both as a Museum, and as documentary center. It offers many permanent and temporary exhibitions, focusing on the history of Jews in France during the war. A permanent exhibition shows photos, videos and personal items of deportees. It also offers meetings and debates, and organizes, several times a year, trips to places of memory (Auschwitz-Birkenau).
The memorial also houses the Centre of Contemporary Jewish Documentation (CDJC) , created during World War II by Isaac Schneerson and Leon Poliakov. This resource center was designed to gather documentary evidence of the extermination of Jews.
The visitor will also discover the Wall of Names : stones brought from Jerusalem in which are engraved the names of 76,000 Jewish men, women and children deported from France between 1942 and 1944 to the camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka, Sobibor, and many other ominous places.
In the crypt situated below the square, a black marble Star of David, symbolic tomb of the six million Jews dead unburied, can be found.
A place of transmission of the duty to remember and a message of peace against hatred and contempt.
