The Museum of Rodin Paris : Paris Tourism

Hotel Biron 77 rue de Varenne 75007 Paris In 1908 the hotel Biron sheltered artists, amongst them Rodin. The state owns this magnificent rock building since 1911. In 1916, Rodin made a donation of his creations : drawings, sculptures, ancient photos, archives… which permitted the state to open a museum in 1919. The artist’s work, inspired by different contemporary artistic movements, is exhibited in the museum. Rodin had first a romantic to pathetic style, later a naturalist one, with the desire to expose an anatomic truth. He also passed by new art. The diversity of the materials he used were the force of his works : bronze sculptures, marble, baked clay… his private collection was of 7 000 drawings from many artists among whom Van Gogh, Monet, Carriere were the most famous. One can also discover his student Camille Claudel, to whom a room of the museum is devoted. Various bronze sculptures are exhibited in the three hectares park, among them the thinker, the hell’s door (unfinished work inspired from the Hell by Dante), the bourgeois de Calais.
