The Basilica of the Sacré Cœur is a part of Montmartre landscape and dominates the hill with its Roman-Byzantine front, its bright white domes and its bell tower.

However its construction was problematic as the defeat against Prussia in 1870 and the events in the capital marked people. They concluded they were paying for the sin of a Century without religion.

Alexandre Legentil and Hubert Rohault de Fleury decided to build a church devoted to the cult of the Sacré Coeur. In 1873 the National Assembly agreed with the project whose spokesman was the archbishop Guibert.

Paul Abadie won the architectural competition and the basilica would later be raised on Monmartre. The funds mainly came from individuals. The construction which started in 1875 ended in 1919 after another war.
