Description
2-6, place de la Bastille
75012 Paris
Starting point of the Revolution, the Bastille is now best known for its contemporary architecture opera which features diverse shows for all ages.
Inaugurated on July 14, 1989, to mark the bicentenary of the French Revolution and the storming of the Bastille, the origin of the Bastille Opera went back 1982. President François Mitterrand wished to give a second opera to Paris, which responds to a desecration of opera played at the Opera Garnier. He imagined a " modern and popular opera", accessible to everyone.
In 1983, Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott was designated to build the opera, after an international competition organized by the city of Paris. Work began in 1984. The monument sits east of Paris, popular district, which symbolically meets the wishes of the President, and replaced the Paris-Bastille railway station.
The work was completed in 1989. The opera is a 80-meter high. The modern style outside plays on transparency effects. It consists of dark gray marble and glass and makes the inside visible. The inside consists of materials of various sources : pear wood from China, Britain blue granite and white marble from Verona.
In March 1990, the Palais Garnier and the Bastille Opera merged to form the Paris Opera . On March 17, 1990 The Trojans, by Berlioz, was the first opera to be performed at the Bastille Opera.
In 1994, the Paris Opera became Paris National Opera and opened to foreign countries.
This large modern theater can accommodate up to 2,700 people with a breathtaking view on the stage. Acoustics and technical facilities are unanimously recognized.
