Description
La Grande Arche de la Defense, commonly known as the Defense Ark, is in the business district of Paris La Défense.
The construction project of the Arche de la Defense was born from the will of the presidents Georges Pompidou and Valery Giscard d'Estaing to add an architectural work to the long axis formed by the Arc de Triomphe and the Carrousel. It's finally President François Mitterrand in 1982 that launched the Defence Head project.
An international architectural competition was organized and more than 400 anonymous projects were considered. The project made by architect Johann Otto von Spreckelsen project and designer Erik Reitzel, was chosen: to build a large ark, an Arc de Triomphe of the twentieth century, symbolizing humanity and humanitarian ideals rather than military victories .
The Arche de la Defense was inaugurated in 1989, a date that was not trivial since it celebrated the bicentennial of the French Revolution and the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower. The new arch would also host the G7 summit.
This monumental building fits perfectly into La Defense modern style. The Ark of Defense has the form of a gigantic hollow 112-meter cube on each side, within which we could place Notre-Dame de Paris! Dressed in white Carrara marble, granite and 5-inch gray reflective glasses, the Ark offers 115,000 m² of offices.
The building houses the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, Transportation and Housing in its south side, since September 2009 the Institute of Economics and Management Science - School of Management and Lille Free Law School have taken place in the base.
The roof housed the Museum of Computing, a club of elected councils: the "Roof Citizen", and a gourmet restaurant: the ô110. In 2010, the roof was closed to the public after a serious failure of the elevators that allow access. The Department of Sustainable Development decided that it would then accommodate offices and meeting rooms.
The prospect of the Arche de la Defense close the long axis which includes the Arc de Triomphe and the Carrousel. In its heart there is "the Cloud", a lightweight structure of stretched canvas, attached by twenty feet high cables.
