Description
The old fortress built under the reign of Francois I in 1524 became a state prison in the 18th century. The jail became notorious thanks to a novel by Alexandre Dumas and its hero: Edmond Dantès.
This hero, victim of a conspiracy, was arrested and imprisoned on the day of his wedding anniversary. He managed to escape 14 years later and created the myth of the only fugitive ever to flee this prison.
